Education and Outreach

Education

The Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture is dedicated to working with local schools. We understand the diverse needs of Columbia-area educators, and are more than willing to offer help in developing lessons that best suit their grade level and curricula.

If you are interested in having a class trip to one of our gardens, please contact us to discuss the best plan to fit your needs. We currently have several fun gardening-related activities for elementary students, and experience teaching lessons on:

  • Composting
  • Gardening
  • Sprouting Seeds
  • Vermi-composting (worms)

Please contact us if you need advice and guidance on implementing gardening curriculum in your classroom.

Outreach

A primary goal of CCUA is to create a local food system that supports our community and enables citizens to create their own food systems at home or in gardens around Columbia. Our Outreach programming has developed to include:

Opportunity Gardens

The Opportunity Garden Program is our most successful outreach venture. Through grant funding, we are able to provide free vegetable gardens and first-year mentoring to low-income Boone County residents.

The Dirt

Opportunity Garden Newsletter: Each season, Opportunity Gardeners receive a newsletter with gardening advice, recipes and news from CCUA.

Institutional Involvement

We strive to work with locally-based organizations and institutions to strengthen our community of food-growers. Growing food enriches peoples’ lives and we are proud to join forces with other community led groups in their garden spaces.

Urban Orchards

Throughout Columbia, and prevalently in the public housing areas, we have developed landscape sites that show-off the vast array of beautiful, edible plants rather than high maintenance ornamentals. Fruit trees, herbs, strawberries, berries and nut trees are some of our favorite landscape features. Hire us for your next landscaping project.

Please contact us if you need advice and guidance on implementing gardening curriculum in your classroom. Please send all comments or questions about gardening in the classroom to education@columbiaurbanag.org.
