In Spring of 2009 the Juvenile Justice Center contacted the Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture about revitalizing an old garden spot on JJC grounds. The visions from JJC was to have a garden that residents could help take care of with support from staff. The food would be incorporated into the cafeteria so food served would include food grown by residents.
Through funds in the CCUA’s Opportunity Garden program this vision was able to become a reality. CCUA staff and volunteers and JJC staff and residents all pitched in for one big day of making a beautiful garden. CCUA staff goes out to do garden lessons with staff and residents regularly.
