Projects: Gardening

The Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture currently manages three sites in the Columbia area: the Demonstration Garden, the Smith & Fay Production Farm and Kilgore’s Pharmacy Garden. If you are interested in a tour of one or more of our gardens, please contact us to set up an appointment or schedule a tour. We can handle groups of up to 50 people.

Demonstration Garden

If you think you need a huge yard to create a bountiful garden, think again. At the CCUA Demonstration Garden – located at the corner of Ash Street and St. Joseph Street – we have over one hundred varieties of vegetables, fruits, flowers, and herbs on display. Feel free to visit the garden and take a look around at your leisure or drop by during our volunteer hours and learn a variety of techniques for making your own garden plentiful.

Volunteer workdays for the Demonstration Garden are Sundays and Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Make sure to bring gloves, a hat, sunscreen, closed-toe shoes and a water bottle.

Smith & Fay Production Farm

Want to see an urban farm in action? Drop by the CCUA Smith & Fay Production Farm – located at 1209 E. Smith Street – and see how we’ve changed an empty lot into a serene, green, veggie-producing machine. Veggies aren’t the only things thriving at the farm; we are also hosting two beehives, courtesy of Art and Vera Gelder from Walk-About Acres (walk-aboutacres.net), and will also have chickens on site. Drop by the farm and have a look around, or lend a helping hand during our volunteer hours.

Kilgore’s Medical Pharmacy Garden

The CCUA is also currently managing the Kilgore’s Medical Pharmacy Garden located at 700 N. Providence Road. This wonderful urban garden was put in place to benefit the Nora Stewart Early Learning Center and is helping preschoolers learn the basics about growing their own food.
