Produce Prescription

Food As Medicine

Produce Prescription is a pilot collaboration between CCUA, Compass Health Network, and Columbia Farmers Market. Through the program, healthcare providers at Compass Health Network can prescribe a “dose” of fresh fruits and vegetables to current patients who live in Boone County and have children 19 and younger living in their household.

Once a week, families are able to take their prescription to Columbia Farmers Market to exchange it for tokens that can be spent at the market for fresh fruits and vegetables. Each family’s prescription is based on the number of people living in the household, and provides at least $20 per week to spend with local farmers on fresh produce.

By providing this [prescription] card to my family, we were able to get more vegetables for our household. I was able to actually venture out and try vegetables that I wouldn’t have picked up before because I didn’t have the extra funds to spend on something my kids might not like. “Might” is a big shot in the dark when referring to funds and food. That is not a chance I was willing to take previously.
